Englishangel wrote: "My daughter is doing film at uni. and has to do an essay on a British film and how it relates to its time. I suggested the Lavender Hill Mob and/or Passport to Pimlico (my personal favourite) but she is doing my husband's favourite, Local Hero." Both are right up there...

Good call englishangel, definitely the Robert Donat version of Goodbye Mr. Chips, although the O'Toole/Petula Clark version does have a certain charm (I was always in love with Petula from that period). The actor Trevor Eve has always reminded me of Donat… (could be just me) Luckily I grew up when...

Hmm... perhaps 7.20 was the wrong time. I think we were roughly awoken at 7.05 to be out on the Avenue by 7.15 to "march" (slouch/stumble) to Dining Hall by 7.20. I thoroughly disagree that it's good for the soul to get up during precious dream time! Or when it's dark! Research in the last...

Not that I mean Vita S-W is dull, but many's a boring book been written on a fascinating subject.

I only had to wear that get-up a few times, but socks and a jumper were not uncommon in bed. I do actually have evening "lounging" wear now (some freebie Calvin Klein pyjama trousers and a t shirt usually, but no proper 'jamas or dressing gown) but it all comes off at bedtime. I believe th...

In 1977 you went for the first time in UF, but I can't remember how those in higher years were chosen. I certainly remember that the "largesse" coin often proved too tempting to hold onto, and was often spent or sold shortly afterwards.

I have an almost identical shot to Gingerbeard's of Peele B marching in almost exactly the same spot, but from 1977. Will post if I can dig it out.

Nothing. All year round. The naughty naked nude is the only way to be. Wore CH style jimjams for a few (flat/bedroom sharing) years after leaving school, but have NEVER since been so cold as in CH dorms or my relatives' place in Kent. In bed at CH, remember on more than one occasion wearing all at o...

Went to the doctor the other day.
He said "You're really going to have to stop masturbating".
I asked "Why?"
He said "Because I'm trying to examine you"

Currently: One In Three by my next door neighbour Adam Wishart , a highly readable account of the history of cancer, written in the wake of his father's death. Only just started it, but it's superbly written, and was nominated for a science book prize. Before that, Mr.Tambourine Man by John Einarsso...

CH uniform worn by non members of school?

On the XTC album Skylarking from 1986, Andy Partridge is wearing a CH coat on the inner sleeve photo. Has anyone spotted another non CH person wearing one? (The fella on the inner sleeve of the first Madness album doesn't count - he was at CH and sent in his photo)

Not only a re-scrub, but you'd be asked to hold out your hand and Ajax, Vim or some other toxic powdered abrasive would be poured onto it so you could melt away the offending epidermis. Ah, those were the days.
