Interesting and varied reactions. The CH I ( and M.V.) knew was definitely 19th century, but so large a part of our lives ( remember, we spent 8 months a year there, with no exeat weekends or away-days - visits were 3 Saturdays a term), that it is not surprising that, for a short period anyway, we r...

you lot have no idea how lucky you were to have access to music-machines, whatever the type/model... back in my days at Hertford ( read Borstal), we had communal radio in the day-room ( only on at tea-time in the week-end) and radios in the LVI and UVI studies - again, only usable in the evening, an...

Amazingly at my age, I still have clear memories of some teachers : - Miss Rutherford, who taught me french to A-level: an inspiration both as an academic and as a woman, I think in reprospect she served as role-model for many years. I bought my Bordas because of her... Remember going to hear her pr...

Re: If I'd known then what I know now,...
Go on - what would you have done differently at CH if you knew then what you know now?! Hopefully you don't regret whatever it is too much - it's just part of that great learning curve called life. On a more serious note - if I had know then that you CAN stand up to authority, contest it and , with...

It wasn't all bad - once they got rid of chapel caps... and having everything supplied ( and I do mean everything, right down to bras and tights ) was a great leveler - very democratic. I remember when our outdoor coats were changed for blue harris tweed with leather buttons - they were beautiful an...

CH is not for everyone
As an OB ( Hertford generation) , I planned practically from birth to send my son to Horsham. He got in , but was desperately unhappy ( mainly from incredible and indefensible bullying - to physical agression level). I finally had to move him to KES, where he was blissfully happy - as was his sister...

Hertford vs Horsham
To answer previous - yes, Hertford was the closest thing to a female Borstal imaginable - totally oppressive, surprised we didn't all turn into raging neurotic nymphos when we got out into the wide world ( well, ok, some did ....) . Sent my son to Horsham, and was totally blitzed by the difference -...
