Re: Jade Goody
Quite apart from the fact that she is intent on making as much money as she can for her children's future, my gut feeling is that she needs to declare very publicly by whom she wants her children to be brought up. Given that whoever does that will have a vast trust fund (presumably) at their disposa...

Re: Thinking about being a hopeful new parent
I had the same problem - going from being at the top of the class in primary school to near the bottom most of the time at CH, and I could never get my parents to understand that everyone else at CH had also been top of their primary classes, so someone had to come further down! When I was in my 50'...

Re: Dentists
So I wonder which is cheaper - the NHS or the air fare to Thailand? Probably not much in it!

Re: The Pedant's Revolt
Having read loads of old threads on the forum in the last few days, I have rather lost track of which one was The Hag - but I suspect it would have been Miss Jenkins - the woman who blighted my life! I think she arrived in my UIV year. Prior to that I had had a year in 5's, when it was a junior hous...

Re: The Pedant's Revolt
Does anyone remember Morag Harper - Sixes, tall, red hair and navy blue eyes? She used to tell a tale of her younger sister who had asked her mother if she could call her by her Christian name. She was so shocked when her mother said yes that she never actually did so! Whatever happened to Morag? Sh...

Re: Are we alone?
Wow! So in retrospect, once my girls were both at CH and I was available to go out and earn a living commensurate with my potential ability after receiving a CH education, if I had actually done so I would probably have had to withdraw them from school because of the resulting increase in their fees...

Re: Margaret Wilson, RIP
The version of Yorkshire rivers that I learned definitely included the Don - I wonder if the boundaries moved after my time (1956 - 62)? What I cannot now remember though are the stations on the Trans Siberian Railway, some of which made wonderful substitutes for swear words - Vladivostok, Verkhoyan...

Re: O level Results
I left CH in the LVI and went on to do different A levels elsewhere. The day my A level results arrived I was doing a holiday job in the local tax office where we handled the employees of a number of Kensington hotels. That day a Spanish waiter came in to the counter, who spoke very little English a...

Re: Are we alone?
I agree - but none of you have answered my original question, which was whether or not there is actually any way that CH could check the veracity of a declaration of income. If figures are declared they can be checked, but if they are not declared does the school have any legal means of confirming t...

Re: The Pedant's Revolt
My pet hate is people who criticise other people's 'pron ou nciation' when the word is actually 'pronunciation' - particularly when it is done by broadcasters and others whose business is words. Once when one of my children was in junior school they had a sponsored spell with graded lists of words t...

Re: Are we alone?
Just a thought .............. I am curious to know whether in a two-parent family if both parents work but only one parent declares their income is their any legal way that the powers-that-be at CH can obtain that information? I know that bodies such as the Inland Revenue have a right of access, but...

Re: Compare and contrast
Whew! I am so relieved not to have offended you, Jo. Of course when I said that bit about it not mattering how you worship as long as you do, I was quoting from a sermon, so I was (literally - an overused expression, but here I mean it literally)preaching to the converted - I assumed that the people...

Re: How reading made us modern
My own daughter Maria had the same experience - her friends from primary school seemed to think that she had been sent away as a punishment. (No doubt she will comment further when she reads this!) I remember when I came home for the first holidays being teased by local friends because I sounded 'as...

Re: Compare and contrast
You know that and I know that - I was carefully not revealing the fact to the rest of the world!! The fascinating thing - for the rest of you out there - is watching Maria's 3 year old daughter, Hanna, who seems to have no difficulty remembering which language to speak to which set of grandparents. ...

And the same to you, Maria. For the uninitiated it means Happy Friendship Day or something like that, and no I do not speak Finnish.
