Isn't it degrees proof rather than percent proof?

Re: Does anyone on this forum go to church?

I suppose huntertitus is entitled to the opinion stated --- however to state that Evangelists are dreadful -- puts my back up and I grind my teeth. I also note that He/She is not clever enough to spell EVANGELISTS His /Her statements are sweeping and ill- founded. Has He/She considered the work, th...

Re: Health and safety gone mad!

I have obviously led a very sheltered life - didn't realise that this happens in reality. If the US are doing this, are we also? Presumably the US have a different attitude to Health and Safety (see topic!) from ours and it obviously doesn't apply to the military! Just how accurate are these things...

Re: Health and safety gone mad!

It has always struck me, that, on Remembrance Day, we remember the Forces who have died, but no mention is made of the Civilians ---on both sides. In our church we have, on the one hand, a very traditional service with most of the serving personnel wearing uniform, a march past by the Royal British...

Re: I'm an immigrant too!

Me too! The Lorings are Huguenots and my branch of the family effectively emigrated to the American colonies before being kicked out having stayed loyal to the Crown during the war of Independence. My mother's family were Anglo-Irish, most of whom eventually came back to the UK although my maternal ...

Re: Call 112 from a Cell Phone

I'm always wary of any advice that mentions "cell phones". That's not what we call mobiles in the UK so it suggests the story has been lifted verbatim from the U.S. Actually Jo you are mistaken. The title was all my own work; the original was something like 'Now it's getting dark!' As I explained a...

Call 112 from a Cell Phone

I have just received this in an e-mail; can anyone verify it? A bit of useful advice - verified by the Wiltshire Police . The number does work from a mobile. This actually happened to someone's daughter. Lauren was 19 yrs old and in college. This story takes place over the Christmas/New Year's holid...

Now that the ridiculous fourth plinth experiment is finally over, what about a statue of a British soldier in desert cams, no rank or regiment, as a permanent exhibit?

Re: Student Finance England

May I draw your attention to the Daily Mail, Saturday 10 October 2009, page 9, where there is an article entitled Third of freshers still without loans? It seems that you are by no means alone. I don't know whether Student Finance England and the Student Loans Company (SLC) to which this article ref...

Re: Tattoos anybody?

Obviously entirely a matter of personal choice but anyone choosing to get a visible tattoo needs to be aware that they will be judged as a result, however unfairly. They also start to look pretty awful on people as they age and a good percentage appear to regret them. Certainly not my cup of tea and...

Re: Farting

There are a number of things that smell far worse than even the worst fart but we won't go into them here. The bottom line if you'll excuse the pun is that farting really is funny. I discovered this at CH when I let one out during one of Duncan Noel-Paton's appalling drama lessons; whilst the class ...

Re: Current reading matter

Won't take you long Maggie, but you will enjoy it! I still can't recommend highly enough Melvyn Bragg's 'novel' (though it is clearly autobiographical) entitled 'Remember Me'. Beautifully written and breathtakingly honest. When was this released? I imagine that it is the next in the series that sta...

Re: Ashes to Ashes

I've watched 'bits' of it. I just can't get my head round the story-line, though. It's so improbable/impossible. Pure escapism but absolutely brilliant; the best drama I'd seen on British tv for years. Interestingly, my boss in my previous posting had relatively recently left Greater Manchester CID...
