Re: A letter from the CHOBA board

Roger Martin I guess, as he’s been charged. According to the letter someone only gets suspended when charged and and is then expelled if found guilty. They don't write it but if charged and found not guilty then their suspension should be withdrawn. That is the theory but there have been any number...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Her speech struck me as too pat; even in such a situation can you remember in such vivid detail the house that you went to and who was there and the events leading up to your visit 30 years ago? She said that she had been sunbathing and diving at the country club; I don't know if she wa a competiti...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Don't get me wrong. I think she's probably telling the truth. But two things worry me: (1) the timing; and (2) the notion that an adolescent escapade (however unpleasant) should harm someone's career. Her speech struck me as too pat; even in such a situation can you remember in such vivid detail th...

Re: Corporal Punishment by CH Teaching staff

Sejintenej wrote: "... Some classrooms are described as a madhouse because teachers have no authority to enforce discipline and in some (rare) cases parents get violent with the teachers. I blame it also on parents who often do not impose discipline at home. " Is that a general observation or is it...

graham writes : "The way you phrased your comment is interesting. Every now and then a man and a woman, strangers, would find themselves in such a compartment and the woman would allege that the male passenger had molested her in some way." You are misinterpreting what I wrote. I was merely describ...

Re: Corporal Punishment by CH Teaching staff

. No corporal punishment now but has hooliganism and bad behaviour got any worse as a result since we were there? . As you rightly point out, we certainly know about some of the abusive behaviour of the teachers. In answer to your question I reckon the answer is yes. Not necessarily in terms of num...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Yes, juries are affected by the popular prejudices and beliefs of the time, but this is outweighed by the benefits. In any case the attitudes to sexual assault are becoming better gradually. From my limited exposure Judges and Magistrates are actively trrying to ensure that both sides have a level ...

Re: Corporal Punishment by CH Teaching staff

There are the top draw tories who got beaten regularly at Eton etc, and then carried on paying a fortune to have the pleasure of having it done again in the west-end of London ! and there are top drawer idiots whose ienjoyment is likened to standing, fully clothed in a cold shower tearing up five p...

Re: Attitudes to sports

Just read today that although today's young people are taller and heavier they are not so muscular, in spite of all that gym equipment. There's just less regular physical exercise to build up muscle than many of you had. Surely all that sport forced on the older OB had some effect? Those of us invo...

Re: Attitudes to sports

I knew only the JH Edwards regime for PT and I still remember (more or less) the single session he gave at the start of the year for monitors to learn his principles of PT, when devising exercises for the daily 10 minute outdoor, weekday (Wed excepted) morning PT sessions. It was: 1. Start with a m...

Re: Death of John Edwards (Horsham Staff 1939-74)

In reply to Sejintenej, my memory of seeing Col A doing morning PT was when the Juniors were being taken by "Elvis" Carter. Carter was a rock 'n' roll fan and always had an enviable supply of the latest chart singles which our guys in Col B would sometimes borrow. On this occasion he had clearly go...

Re: Death of John Edwards (Horsham Staff 1939-74)

...By the way, does the School still have the daily (weekdays) 10 minute gym/PT sessions on the grass in front of each house, or something similar? We didn't even have that in my time (67-75 - so not that long after you!) I doubt it's been reintroduced! We had it on the tarmac behind the house in 1...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Not entirely rhetorical. This is the first time I've seen anyone connected to the school acknowledge that any mistakes were made. The school just said it was all very sad that it happened to occur there. From Rob's last meeting nd those to come I think it is clear that at, least, the school is not ...

Re: Attitudes to sports

Here are some additional memories of the eastern half of The Avenue during the late 40s and early 50s. In swimming Reynolds (MidB?) then held the record of 13.2 sec for one length (how many yards/metres?) of the old swimming baths (located not far from the station in former cowsheds and next to the...
