Re: Shelagh Regester

So sorry to hear this news. I hadn't seen Shelagh since we left school but I'm remembering parties at her parents' house (somewhere near Beckenham?) in the holidays. She said once that her parents had called her Shelagh and her brother Graham, thinking that they were names that could not be shortene...

Re: All Change Miss Tucker?

that expression "The Three Bears". The first time I heard this was when I discovered I was working with a girl who turned out to have been at Hertford - quite a bit younger than me, obviously. (I'd wondered why we seemed to get along so well...) She explained that Miss Morrison had chumme...

Re: Herts Memories

The other thing that is odd about this is that I can't recognise the room in the first photo. Does anyone else remember a room that looked like this?

Munch/Angela
I was looking at a book of photographs of natural phenomena - 'Patterns of the Earth' - last week and on seeing photos of ox-bow lakes, Miss Wilson's teaching flooded back to me and I gave myself a little talk on meanders and how they form ox-bows. Very satisfying!

Re: Looking back

Alex I don't think I'm an example of CH providing a great education. I was just very obedient, had a good memory and b****r all else to do with my time! The thing I regret is the choices that the bizarre CH system forced on us. Like Kim, I know almost nothing about British history, having given up h...

Re: Sue Bowles

Perhaps she was young for her year then. The cut off seemed to be round about Christmas, not September, but quite a few people were even younger - in our year I know Trish Buddle was the youngest with a birthday in early May, but Eileen Downing wasn't much older than Trish. My birthday is mid augus...

Am I the only one who remembers her being known as the Pekinese Ridsdale??

Re: CH graces in the Church Times

I was a school reader too. I remember the trial in the Chapel. The other thing I remember is that being somewhat vertically challenged, in order to see the bible on the lectern I needed a box to stand on. So when it was my turn to read, I had to find the box (can't remember where it was kept) and ma...

Re: IVs, 5s, and 6s

re being discouraged from having friends in other houses, I had to ask permission to visit my twin sister Ann in the next door house ... Yes it did seem odd but no, it wouldn't have occurred to me to complain or question it. I seem to recall that there was a little notebook on a ledge in the hall by...

Re: IVs, 5s, and 6s

References to 1s, 2s etc up to 8s are to the houses we lived in. When the girls' school took children at 8/9/10, 1s and 5s were junior houses; when you were 11 you moved to one of the other, senior, houses. When the school stopped taking such young girls, and everyone started at 11 or older, all the...

No, Kathleen and I were always more fellow-travellers than friends. I'm sure that somewhere else on this forum I've told my favourite Kathleen story ... but for those who haven't heard it: We were in a Greek a level class - so that means just Kathleen, me and Queenie Blench. The classics room was in...

Re: Just stumbled upon this site.......sounds like fun...

Apology accepted! Occasionally I forget I'm a twin, so there's no reason why anyone else should remember, especially as we look so unlike. Looked quite different when we were at school and still do. Everyone else seems to have much better recall of their schooldays than I do, but sometimes a memory ...

Re: First Day.....Last Day

First Day I haven't thought about this probably since the day itself, but I remember me, my Dad and my twin sister Ann arriving and going in through the front gates. And it was only then that I discovered that Ann and I wouldn't be in the same house, the school having previously given the impression...

I have 2 claims to fame from my CH days: i) I never spent so much as a single day in the infirmary, a fact much exclaimed upon at some sort of 'leaving medical'. ii) I got a new pair of shoes when I went there and wore them for the entire 6 years. Thinking about that now they must have been a bit bi...
