Re: Yellow dresses
I remember the yellow dresses as my sister Paula wore them when she was at Hertford from 1954-61 – I even have a photo of her in one somewhere. Your tale of stitching yellow fabric for scrubs reminds me of her darning skills that she learn at CH. She used to say that they had to darn their knickers ...

Re: Where does the word "Toyce" come from?
....which we used to call a "settle". Strange how I remember that but I don't remember using the word 'Toyce'. The more usual term for a toyce is a 'carrel unit' but I don't think it was ever called that at CH.We had the box beside the bed .....

John wrote There are Barnes B contemporaries on this forum who may have other memories. I remember Neil Simms quite well. I put a house photo of Barnes B taken in 1961 on the site in 2005 see https://www.chforum.info/php/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=687 and he is clearly in it. He seemed quite quiet and...

Re: Matrons
Mike, I guess when you are only 11 or 12 any age over 18 seems like old age - sadly that it no longer the case. I consider 40 to be very young now! However I think she was probably in her 30s not 40s, at least when I first arrived in 1959. Maybe she had some private income so that she was able to af...

Re: The Old Blue 2018
Reflecting on (returning to?) the topic “Old Blue 2018” the "school like no other" claim has already been discussed. I would take issue with almost the very first claim in the brochure, “Christ’s Hospital is the most diverse boarding school in the UK.” I can think of at least one school (e...

Re: Expelled
John asked Just for my education, is there a difference between expelled and excluded? I used to be the Chair of Governors of a comprehensive school and had to deal with this quite a lot. Exclusion can either be fixed-term exclusion in which case it is also known as suspension or it can be permanent...

Re: The Deputy Head Writes...
I'm confused by this I’m so proud that 98 per cent of our leavers, many of whom have faced high levels of adversity, leave us as confident young men and women, having secured places at top universities and who often later return to help future generations of pupils either financially or through adv...
