I have a feeling that what you say is just an illusion.
Forty years ago I have similar memories of bullying getting less as we went through the school, and being nearly non existent when we left. I have a feeling we just didn't notice any more!

We used to have to have our hair cut by the barber behind the tuck shop; big guy with a wooden leg. No choice of cut of course, just short back and sides and out the door. John Rutley must remember.

I remember Lorimer teaching me Geography. I always thought he was one of the more human teachers,( but not humane, of course). I've got a photo of him riding his bicycle and smiling away, but I have forgotten how to post it.

I used to live near Guildford, and one of my fondest memories is travelling home at the end of one summer term. It was a little steam train puffing slowly along. I was alone in a carriage and discovered that the long picture window could fold in and up, leaving the whole side open. I have never seen...

It was actually on the crossing, you can see the old white crossing gates in the picture that has the CH boy (Andy Harding) in it.

In those days there was only one line past CH at the bottom of Sharpenhust next to some rugby pitches. Has so much changed?

1964 Train Crash

You can click on the pictures for a bigger image.
I remember being amazed the next day that it wasn't headline news in all the newspapers.Only a few lines in the back somewhere. It was very exciting for us though.
