How Much Kit Brought Down From Newgate Street Still Exists?

The tables in the dining hall were brought down from Newgate Street, weren't they? And their tops were later covered in Formica? And the metal-framed plank-beds came down too? How about the old day-room tables and benches of yore? But what else from Newgate Street is still in use, excluding fixtures...

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?

Meanwhile, I continue to wonder whether Chapel Practice still happens at CH.

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?

Yes, how come these key life skills are being so readily squandered? Now now, our Avon. I wasn't suggesting that the tunes of hymns, psalms and responses were of earth-shattering importance. I was merely wondering how much of a shambles the rare compulsory chapel services are from a musical point o...

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?

Is there still such a thing as Chapel Practice? If not, and if chapel attendance is no longer compulsory, how do newcomers to the school ever learn the tunes of hymns, psalms and responses if they don't already know them? Or does nobody care any more, because compulsory chapel services are so rare t...

Was Rock 'n' Roll Banned at CH in the Fifties?

I was just reading ZeroDeConduite's reminiscence about walking from CH to Broadbridge Heath in the 1950s to listen to rock 'n' roll on the jukebox in a bikers' café and I was left wondering what the school's attitude to the rock 'n' roll explosion had been. (My apologies if this topic has been raise...

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?

I recall Sergeant Guest sporting an army woolly pully but never saw him in any sort of uniform. As for what his duties were in my day, beyond supervising drills and swimming lessons and overseeing the Post Office, I have no idea. I never once saw him enter a classroom. Did he do things on Field Days...

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?

Is there still a School Sergeant at CH? If not, when was the role done away with and why? In my day it was Sergeant Guest and we were all a bit terrified of him, even though he was kindly enough at swimming lessons. He and his wife lived at and ran the old CH Post Office. Is the School Sergeant conc...

Re: RIP Tom Jeffers 1944-2020

Likewise, I never heard a bad word about Tom Jeffers. A thoroughly decent cove, was Tom. He taught me German for a year and French for two years and was always fair-minded, never moody. The only time I can recall his getting annoyed was when his young daughter was ill at home and he emerged from mor...

Re: Absenteeism

Re. the concept of School Beatings, I remember Alan O'Neal (Ma.A/Col.A, 1970s) telling me that when his uncle was at the school (1950s?) there was a big outbreak of thievery amongst the pupils and when the guilty parties were finally identified they were caned in the Quad in front of the entire sch...

Re: What were your thoughts about the theatre?

I must admit I absolutely loved the place. I used to do stage crewing there and front of house too, which meant that I saw many, many performances for free and the standard of touring productions etc. was high, not least because there weren't all that many arts centres around in those days, let alon...

Re: Roger Martin - trial

I think it'd make abundant sense now for Julian to delete the inexcusably large number of needlessly unpleasant posts on this thread and then to lock it until the end of time. Justifiable posts should stay, while petty and downright unjustifiable posts should go. Vilified had every right to raise hi...

Re: Roger Martin - trial

Those were the days spoken of with nostalgia by many now when a policeman would give an errant youngster 'a clip around the ear'. Such discipline was sanctioned in usage if not in law. It was not regarded then as disproportionate. I entered teaching direct from university, as you could then, with n...
