Re: Ajaz Karim found guilty

I once offered a prize to anyone on the internet who could nominate a politician of any country and of any time period who was undoubtedly ans incontroversially honest. The prize has not been earned. Martin Bell. When can I collect my prize please? If you are referring to the Martin Bell who is bei...

Re: Sentence of Peter Webb referred to Court of Appeal

When Sejintenej was given the slipper by Kit (often) was it intended to really hurt or was it a kind of ritual humiliation? Humiliation comes under many covers, not just sexual, and in my opinion the boarding schools then were very good at it. I had and have no doubt whatsoever that the intention w...

Re: Ajaz Karim found guilty

I feel insulted that in all my time on the site I haven't been censored. I'm obviously not trying hard enough. "Could do better" as my reports used to say. Housie obviously FAILED you that it seems that you cannot raise Julian's ire; why not go and do the nasty on a few gravestones. We respect the ...

As boarding schools were overwhelmingly upper-middle class, and so were most writers, it is not too surprising that this was the ethos reflected.
Like the press and MPs we do forget the "other class" of boarding schools - borstals - whose form of education seems not to have been of any quality

One last question, why do so many on here seem to hide behind pseudonyms? Yours fraternally, AliBurns Pot kettle black? At least most of us have our names on the screen. In my case my nom de plume has been in use for several dcades, on a number of sites and has a technical reason and historical sig...

Re: Sentence of Peter Webb referred to Court of Appeal

The system of detention was widely used in my time, a shame some teachers didn't use that deterrent more rather than inflicting physical pain on young boys, some of whom could have been scarred for life by the methods used. , Rather ironically, whilst my back, backside and thighs were "well treated...

Re: CH and flu

There is a good BBC4 programme on iPlayer called 'Contagion' which shows how, under some circumstances, a single carrier of a truly virulent form like the 1918/1919 epidemic, walking around Haslemere for one day could end up within two months infecting 41 million people of whom >880,00 will die. St...

Politics - the truth (if there is truth in politics)

“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.” Groucho Marx “Politics is made up of two words... ‘poli’ which is Greek for ‘many’ and ‘tics’ which are blood sucking insects.” Gore Vidal “Politics is War without bloodshe...

She told me later that she tried to say something suitably imprecise, about its depiction of sexuality, and the kinds of language used. "What do you mean?" – "Well, the words that Lawrence uses" – "What words?" – and here, if I have understood correctly, Forum protocol even in 2018 dictates that I ...

. Elsewhere on the site some of the girls have said they resented their punishments at Hertford - in some cases being condemned to be silent for ten minutes: a draconian punishment for a woman. That is a common punishment in a local primary school even today (Oh, and that is in a corner facing the ...

Re: Teacher wage?

Will; you don't say where you are going to. I would have thought £35K for a starting teacher was a very reasonable salary.
Some cities have weighting because of local increased costs and I suspect that some deprived areas will load teachers' income.

Anyone else watch 'Endeavour' last night?

Plenty of references to 'squits.'

Maybe Roger Allam (Chief Inspector Thursday in the programme) had a say in the script.
Squit or squirt? Squirt is slang used outside CH and has a similar meaning

We used 'drut'
This reminded me of an argument between our antipodean cousins plus UK contingent versus the USA gang.

Americans use the word "drug" where we use "dragged" (as in we dragged the body out of the ditch). To them "dragged" is totally wrong, unacceptable....
