Re: How will CH cope with Brexit?

I imagine that Banker Brown is already considering taking a short position on the pound in anticipation of its Icarus-like descent if we leave. Will he be as successful as George Soros and his friends in 1992? What imagination! the contract was done nearly 3 years ago As for language teachers there...

Re: Management knowledge of the Husband/Dobbie cases

Hi Alex. I hope you're well. I have fond (but rather hazy memories) of you as a UF monitor during my first year in Peele B. Don't expect you to remember me. Sorry to hear about your friend. If I'm right that you're implying it was suicide I'd encourage you to inform the police and let them decide i...

Sorry David B U T UK private schools "hogging the resources". ???? If peeps want to spend money in M & S instead of House of Fraser is M & S hogging the national resources? Don't be stupid. If peeps want to pay their hard earned or saved money to sent their sprogs to school A instead of school B (wh...

Re: Politics

the gulf between the top and bottom of society in terms of money/influence/whatever is far greater in countries like India, Thailand, and Brazil than the UK or US. Billionaires are pretty much the same no matter where you go, but even the most neglected towns and estates in the UK are nothing compa...

Boarding schools and their supporters? As Alan Bennett observed in his BBC lecture: "The system is unfair and if this hasn't dawned on these people (the pupils) by the time they leave then their education has been wasted."wouldn't even dirty my shoes o So I refute many of your allegations, am still...

Re: Politics

Don't expect anything useful from this side of the Med John. The Maybot is being blown hither and thither by the various factions in her party. The Guardian political sketchwriter John Crace believes that she is now reduced to taking advice from the four pot plants in the cabinet room in Number 10....

Re: Politics

UKIP (lately transformed into the Tommy Robinson Appreciation Society) and other Europhobes are crying foul about the idea of a second referendum. . Democracy is the acceptance of the view of the majority. The electorate have been given the choice and have voted out despite the efforts (immoral in ...

Re: Col A - is this 1960?

I've tried to avoid mentioning people's nicknames up till now but the mention of Hitchcock reminds me that when I first went into Col B (Autumn term 1955) I remember that Paul Fantle and Hitchcock had just joined Col A and were known as Hitchtool and Fancock by their housemates. After "the incident...

Re: Col A - is this 1960?

I frequently start out looking for a new recipe for shrimp and, 30 minutes later wonder why I am looking at an explanation of how wombats can produce cubical feces. I don't know about prawns (aka shrimp) but there is a wealth of stuff out there. Just counted up and I have all of 124 food sites on m...

Re: Should Christ's Hospital Stop Being a Faith School?

Remarkable article in today's papers in which the Archbishop of Canterbury (or the Rev Oilwelby as Private Eye calls him) admits to sometimes speaking in tongues . Are there any fruitcake evangelicals able to speak in tongues? Grecians in Greek or Latin perhaps. I am sure that David will be not del...

though the head of music was also supportive - in a completely baffled way because he had no idea why, at the age of 17, I developed an interest in compositional harmony and counterpoint. Which was because, in the stifling isolation of the school, I had no idea that anything else (nowadays called '...

Re: Vikki Askew

But as to the other subjects which I was often bl**dy useless at, I don't ever remember any teacher taking me aside and saying: "Look young man, you're having problems with this, aren't you? What is going wrong? Let's see what we can do to help". In that respect I'm not sure that some of those teac...

Re: Vikki Askew

If the state sector is failing it's because it's underfunded and because it has, by definition, to take in the most difficult youngsters and cannot exclude. them. The immensely snooty private sector (including Christ's Hospital) doesn't have to take in the very bottom layer of society and can in an...

Re: Vikki Askew

In my case, these 'fraudulent' teachers are required because the state sector was simply not delivering what was required. A left-hander, in Year 4 of Primary she was still transposing her numerals. Her handwriting was poor and not joined-up and she was stuck firmly in the middle of a mixed ability...
