Re: All this is incredibly sad

Fwiw I thought David was bang on the money. Sex or sexual assault typically happens privately. Only two individuals present and one word against another. All allegations as nothing is proven. Just watching Brett Kavanaugh, the US judge. Not tried for anything but public trial about an alleged assaul...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Yet when those crimes were against children, it seems to have been a tacitly accepted part of the public school system. In other situations adults would have battered abusers and ran them out of town. Public schools were either full of weaklings incapable of taking that on, or it was ignored as sim...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Not entirely rhetorical. This is the first time I've seen anyone connected to the school acknowledge that any mistakes were made. The school just said it was all very sad that it happened to occur there. From Rob's last meeting nd those to come I think it is clear that at, least, the school is not ...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Presumably the first two are rhetorical questions. It would be useful, but I suspect the timing is not right with cases still outstanding. I can understand your questioning of what is written down, but I have already spoken about rigour. Not entirely rhetorical. This is the first time I've seen any...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Note to self : never send emails late at night. Graham, I think you know me well enough to know that I tell it as I see it. I guess it is difficult to convince folk that terrible mistakes made in the past will not be repeated, but I do know the rigour and integrity that is now present at the school...

Re: Can we get transcripts?

Auscript appear to be the company to approach but a transcript for even just a couple of hours is likely to set you back a few hundred pounds. If the school sent its own legal representative to each of the trials then they may have had transcripts made to refer back to. But good luck getting them t...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

A couple of points - whilst I obviously didn’t sleep in the houses (until I was a Grecian), I was up and with the house for shoe inspection at 7.15 in Maine B and only home when it was time for bed. This continued in Maine A (no shoe inspection though by then!) I do not recall eating a meal in term...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

I don’t think it’s a case of resentment or envy, just recognition that they had a different experience and were shielded from what happened in the boarding houses overnight simply because they weren’t there. And they had their parents on hand for a chat and cuddle if needed.... assuming the staff w...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

You may speculate, TMF, as is your right, but the "gilded cage" was not the case for all staff children I can assure you. Some of the most cruel verbal bullying was meted out to some children of staff. You can do untold damage with some of your "speculation". Most cruel verbal b...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

....the assistant chaplain I don’t know that name, she must have been before my time. I’d assumed the assistant chaplain in question was Kate Powell who started in, I think, 1990 or 1991. Thanks, you're right, it was Powell, I've edited my post. Fairly sure if it had been the other person the resul...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

But I didn't know. So the majority of staff probably didn't know. How CH. Flemming knew because complaints about Dobbie were made to him. He didn't take it seriously. Poulton knew. He eventually, reluctantly got rid of his pet project Karim (but gave him a glowing reference anyway). Cairncross knew...

Re: Ernest McCall- Maths teacher / housemaster Maine A

I think Mr Robinson "its not metalwork, its craft, design and technology: cdt for short" in a tough middlesboro accent..... ....was married to a very northern textiles teacher. We had lessons in the lower floor of infirmary. I didn't think it was much fun but a nice girl in our class went ...

It is interesting to read that 2007 thread. E.g. in addition to discussion of McCall's 'spurious circumstances' of departure, there is mention of Burr - here for example a poster hints at the fact that Burr is not a good guy to have around the house: http://www.chforum.info/php/viewtopic.php?f=23&a...

Re: Address to the Governing Council help please

What about Bakers lying letter to parents? If he'd told the truth about why Webb left, parents could have quietly checked on the wellbeing of their kids. Other victims may have come forward at the time, instead of when they were trying to deal with the aftermath as adults, thirty years later. Or all...

Re: Address to the Governing Council help please

Rob, if they cannot provide an internal audit report: Can the Council fully explain the lessons learned from the court cases to prevent any possible recurrence? The Headmasters 5Jul18 statement suggests that this work has already been done: The School has followed the court proceedings very closely....
