Re: Roger Martin - trial

Afraid that none of this changes the overall situation, which is that CH in the 1970s was not a safe place for children, with a growing minority of masters who were unable to control either their sexual or physical behaviour towards those in their charge, and with a regime that was unable to protect...

Re: What Steve Hilton is doing these days

Absolutely spot on Rockfreak. And what happened to the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Committee established by the 2010 Child Poverty Act? The last four board members resigned en bloc in December 2017 citing the Governments total inability to focus on Social Mobility in the aftermath of Brexit. A...

Re: What Steve Hilton is doing these days

Ah yes, our old friend the liberal elite. Was accused of this by two friends recently, both with expensive private education, both from monied backgrounds. As the son of a subpostmaster and the first in the family to get to university I've been wondering: how could I have avoided becoming one of the...

Re: Wendy Fryer

Keith Stratton from the Manual School married Nurse Hagan, Lynn I believe. She had worked at the Belfast Royal Infirmary and would have seen a thing or two in those days before coming to CH, and used to whizz around very impressively in an open top MG. Sadly Keith Stratton died very young leaving hi...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

One other regular contact during the 70s, between Horsham and Hertford that hasn't been mentioned thus far - namely the annual 2nd form Classics trips. One year a delegation of about 20 from Horsham would visit Hertford and visit St Alban's, the following one vice versa for a visit to Fishbourne. Ov...

Re: The Old Blue 2018

My reaction exactly Katharine, glad it's not just me. Having read it I have no idea who its audience is, and I'm nit sure it does either; it seems to have been born out of a somewhat unfocussed sense that 'we need to be seen to be doing something'. New brooms at CHOBA will I hope be addressing this ...

Re: Death of John Edwards (Horsham Staff 1939-74)

I bow in considerable respect rockfreak, that must have been some party. It was always reputed to be the Small Faces that Stigwood was trying to appropriate; Arden also threatened Allen Klein with the window treatment, and Klein wasn't exactly a pushover - as forcing Richard Ashcroft to sign over th...

Don Arden was more my sort of chap. You always knew where you were with him - usually hanging out of a window.

Re: Death of John Edwards (Horsham Staff 1939-74)

Indian Brave was originally by The Outlaws (the UK band, not the US one), which included on guitar one Richie Blackmore. In the mid 70s Blackmore covered Apache on a Shadows tribute album called Twang.

Re: Did anyone know?

If the lady officer you are trying to call is the one who was originally assigned to the case, I believe she is on maternity leave. But her number will be answered, hopefully by the same male officer I spoke to who was professional, well briefed, engaged and entirely objective. A credit to the force...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

I do indeed. Equally the expurgation of history on the Facebook site immediately after the latest guilty verdicts means either 1) moderators with less strength than those we are lucky to have here, 2) guidance from the School, or 3) a mix of both. In any event the result is the same - the only place...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

I like to think I'm a reasonable sort of a chap Richard. The Facebook group fiasco was a really bad crisis PR response; I am trying to give the School a clue about how they might change tack and do the right thing when there can be no further prevarication on legal grounds (deferring as always to yo...

Re: Letter to the Head Master

Just seen the CHOBA News which arrived overnight; no mention of any convictions, presumably as the trials and sentencing are still ongoing. Once we get to a point when the legal processes are all completed, or at least an appropriate pause, I would very much hope that, for the benefit of the majorit...

Re: Dobbie's departure

From the bottom of my heart I hope that all those convicted of sexual crimes against children in their care at CH saw the light on leaving and reformed their lives completely. The very first subsequent conviction that shows that they didn't would heap such utter shame on the school's management for ...
