I remember being taught English by the legend that is Gerald Davies when he returned from the 1971 Lions tour to New Zealand (which we won). For any youngsters reading, at that time victory in New Zealand was equivalent to England's World Cup win in 2003. I thought such a Sporting God would be a re...

As another from the same era you pose what to me is an interesting question. I certainly experienced some real lows during my time at CH but equally I loved the sport and living in such beautiful countryside. I also made some really good mates who I am still in contact with. One other negative, whi...

Re: Tunnels and Chemicals
Ta, muchly, Simon. I spent plenty of memorable time in Nigeria trying to sort out their default and in Brazil trying to sort out Nigeria's default and in London trying to sort out Brazil's default. Now if I had known it was you I'd have asked to be excused Lagos duty; that was even worse than CH. M...

Re: Tunnels and Chemicals
Financial wizard, not genius. I wave my magic wand and another country defaults and we all write of 2 grillion dollars and then go and do it all again. Plus ca change, just like the rain on Sunday afternoons at CH. Talking of which, it's raining here in NY, unfortunately didn't do that last Thursda...

Re: Tunnels and Chemicals
Personally I remember having to use the tunnels to get into Hall in really bad weather. They were preferable in some ways to the more mundane march in. They were actually very practical from that point of view, and what the hell did anyone know about asbestos back then? Dank and smelly and usually ...

Re: CHLF
I have a memory of the Christs Hospital Liberation Front which seemed to be some sort of Communist / Anarchist / Terrorist / Apolitical organisaion whose raison d'etre was to bring down the school and its leaders It was a very exciting time as being only 11 or 12 I really thought (hoped?) they migh...

Well, a lot of us used to use the tube for a quick smoke. A bit risky, given the visibility of the entrances in the courtyards of the houses, but handy for when time was at a premium (e.g. morning break). Only ever got caught twice down there. Aaah, the nostalgic smell of damp, Old Holborn smoke an...

Re: Boomer
On the subject of teacher's nicknames ... anyone remember Boomer (Mr Carrington)? Memories of him shouting at pupils in dining hall and practically lifting them up and chucking them out! Huge man who could really scare the juniors! Went bright red whenever he was shouting at anyone. But he could be...

Re: tunnels
The tube went all way out to the station (if you go down the steps you can see where they blocked off the tunnel). It runs under most of the original buildings (someone once released a stink bomb in chapel from under the floor). What I want to know is if it went out to Sharpenhurst as legend sugget...

Re: Keeley
Tom Keeley used to often park his car outside chapel in the evening and then fall asleep in it. Think he had that sleeping disorder, narcolepsy? This is a change from his practice during chapel in the early 70's of hanging out on Big Side with a flashlight to catch anyone skipping the service. (As ...

Re: Zobs
the "master" to whom you refer was EJ Wolstenholme, No - that's not the Zob I was thinking of - I think I remember Wolstenholme, and he was a lot more cuddly. This Zob was rather authoritarian, a housemaster, and quite feared - hmmm - can't get the name though. I might be able to help her...
