Girlie Magazines, Pin Ups and Other Such Things

Back in the days of Flecker and Seaman, what was the status of papers such as Titbits and Reveille, not to mention the News of the World? Was possession of such things a thrashable offence? And what of the now-very-tame-seeming '50s-style pin-ups showing girls in one-piece or two-piece swimsuits, ca...

Re: Flecker’s Banning of some Comics

I just caught up with this thread, eighteen months late. In my day at CH (1970s), small-format British war comics and American-style comic-books were still referred to as trash mags by the boys, which leaves me wondering when and why the term first came into use at the school. As some will know, all...

Re: How Much Kit Brought Down From Newgate Street Still Exists?

I doubt that the day room tables came down from London. I'd guess they were made to measure for the day rooms, likewise the attendant benches. Curiously though, the benches looked as if they'd taken far more of a battering than the tables. Probably something to do with farting.

Re: UNDERGROUND BUNKER

I remember that one, as I used to pass it frequently in the late 50s on my way to listen to rock'n'roll from the juke box in the biker's caff in Broadbridge Heath. It was just over the little bridge with the flood control sluice over the Arun. I went in there one Sunday morning in the 1970s and the...

Re: The Housey Hotspots, etc

Before it’s too late, are there any recollections of the Housey Hotspots , a boys’ jazz band at Horsham in the 1950s? ..... Has there been such a band at CH since the 50s? In the mid-to-late 1970s - and, for all I know, into the 1980s too - there was the so-called Dance Band, which I recall as a so...

Re: Leave Days in Horsham

If I shut my eyes, I can see the food being served on oval white plates and there's a strong smell of gravy. The plates were blisteringly hot, I remember, and were carried upstairs by the waitresses using thick towels or oven gloves. It definitely wasn't a bright idea to let your fingers brush again...

Re: Leave Days in Horsham

The Sunset Restaurant was pretty much beyond my parents' budget. I think we went there once and I remember it was split-level inside once you got up to the first floor where it was, above a shop. The management imagined it was exotic, when actually it was 1960s cheesy. As for the Goblin's Pool Hotel...

Leave Days in Horsham

If you weren't one of those pupils who were in a position to make a mad dash to their family homes and back on Leave Days, you were probably in the same situation as my parents and I generally were: obliged to spend the day mooching around Horsham in all weathers, trying not to spend money we didn't...

Re: Relationships - Grecian / UF

I must say that I count myself incredibly fortunate not to have been at CH after it went mixed. Even as things were, I found it extremely hard to focus on schoolwork and always put off doing any sort of prep for as long as I realistically could. If girls had been thrown into the equation, I'd have g...

Re: Neil Simms

Neil Simms was a house tutor in my senior house for the whole four years I was there, in which context we only spoke once in all that time. Frankly he was pretty uninvolved in house activities and only seemed to put in the barest minimum of appearances necessary. His life seemed to be more about tea...

Re: Leigh Hunt House Photos...

Pronounced "Foooz" as I recall, with "Fooobear" as a variant. His hairstyle, if you could actually call it that, pretty much defied the laws of physics (why didn't it collapse?) and certainly gave Roy Wood's hairstyle a run for its money. John, do you still sport the 'thatched co...
