Re: Help the newbie!

I first kitted out a 2nd former 9 years ago and then renewed her kit subsequently. Sports kit was fairly rigid in the early days but relaxed as the years went by. She was sporty and in a variety of teams and so used team kit (I never really got my head round that, but I never ended up paying for it)...

Re: Phone boxes

Not a phone in sight in our day was there Katharine. No letter boxes either. All letters had to be left unsealed so the wardmistress could read them. I came close to expulsion for posting a letter on the way up to Ashbourne.

Re: Should there be a separate sub-forum for the “historic abuse” threads?

Katharine and I were contemporaries at Hertford. Like her I was not aware of anything sexual going on. "Squizzing" was a bit bizarre. There was a fair bit of downright unkindness by house staff. Teaching staff hadn't a clue what was going on outside the classroom as far as I could tell. For me the w...

Re: Damian Le Bas, Radio 4 Book of the Week

I wonder if CH collected the "traveller premium". Every state school receives substantial additional funding for every child from a "travelling family" in the school. It's worth having - or was when I was in education.

Re: Loony nonsense at English boarding schools

If you remember, Katharine, I spent most of my school days in trouble because I constantly rebelled against the petty restrictions!

Re: Shrove Tuesday Plays

Yes, my programme was definitely an official school one. So this was almost certainly a "public" performance rather than part of the competition.

Re: Shrove Tuesday Plays

OK. This is remarkable. I have found the programme for House Plays in November 1965. The programme states that the House Acting competition was held in October and the best five went forward for another performance, but I’m not sure for whom we performed. 6’s Quality Street Act 2 Phoebe Throssel ; R...

Re: Tom Lawson: the interview

You will be pleased to know Katharine that there is now a Hertford building at CH. So named in order that Hertford is not forgotten. It is a "social" building with coffee shop etc. Pretty well the antithesis of Hertford but I am sure that it is very welcome and will be well used. What I can't work o...

"Up Tinf" maybe that should go on the Housey slang strand, but - it would probably be lost on them.

Re: Flu in 1957

Yes, I remember "stews". Horrid. But that must have been in the '59 epidemic - I didn't start at CH until Sept '58. I remember that at least 2 Wards were used as convalescence areas. Were we sent home early? Do I remember correctly that we all had to have a clear throat swab before being allowed bac...

Re: Clean clothes at Horsham in the 40s & 50s

It is astonishing how similar this all is to the regime at Hertford in the late 50's and 60's. Sheets top to bottom and a clean one on top every week; clean underclothes and lisle stockings twice a week; clean blouse and pinny once a week. Maybe that was just the national norm at that time.

Re: Old report card

I seem to remember that our reports arrived home before we did at the end of term. In my case that made for a slightly downbeat home coming!
It was a good thing that House Mistresses didn't get to make a comment on our reports. Bad enough that they had a major influence on termly interviews with DR!

Re: Time to bring back Kiff Bowls?

Hi Katharine. I was "de-monned" for organising a slow tea race on the last breakfast of term. The previous term we had got into bother for having our usual tea race (which I agree was potentially a bit dangerous), so I reckoned a slow race might be fun. DR took a different view and I had my mons bad...

Re: 5s and6s

Originally the houses were called Wards and they were numbered round the square from 1-8. Thus you were in Ward 1 or Ward 7 ........... We used the terms 1's, 2's, 3's etc as shorthand. In about the early 60's someone decided that the name Christ's Hospital with the addition of a Ward number was lea...

Re: "Endeavour"

No. We never had coffee in my time at Hertford. Although in the sixth form we were allowed to make hot drinks for ourselves after prep. Why were we second class citizens in all ways?
