Re: Programme of Marches Played by the Christ's Hospital Military Band
I don't know when it appeared in the repertoire, but I remember Swing March being played, and someone jiving in the doorway to Dining Hall which caused some mirth in the band and subsequent faltering and reduction in volume until they controlled the grins...

Re: James Pitcher, BaA, PeA 68-75, RIP
I also recall James from Barnes A. Initially we didn't see eye to eye - more eyeball to eyeball due to an incident in the lav ends where I objected to him throwing a glass of cold water over me in the bath. This resulted in a formally arranged duel of fisticuffs the following morning, when I discove...

Wishing to make some allusion to HMS Troutbridge (The Navy Lark) re the Navy's latest headline-grabbing stunt, I was suprised to find that Leading Seaman Goldstein was one of our finest!

Re: Death of Ben Sweeny alias Spoonbill
My sympathy to you, Rex, and all your family for this sad news. I didn't know him personally but he obviously took on your mantle for contributing to all things CH, and our lives are diminished by his absence. It's good to see you back on the forum but sad that it is in such circumstances. Regards, ...

Re: Sausages!
I recall the sausages - I suspect boiled rather than grilled (no browning) and nicknamed 'pregnant mice'. They were actually nice, and I agree, unique. The peeled tinned tomatoes that went with it had an even more distastefull alliterative nickname referring to monkeys...

Re: Accents at CH Horsham
Jabod, a quibble: There ain't no such thing as 'accentless'. What you presumably mean is that your accent is that of your social surroundings, so it doesn't stand out as 'different'. What I mean is lack of recognisable specific regional accent. You can tell where I'm not from. I would describe my d...

Re: Horsham Pass - Downs Link path
Certainly in the '70s I could cycle to Horsham library (I would start to read one book on my way back - cycling no handed...), and walk to Horsham via the tobacconists (served with Old Holborn or Golden Virginia in Housey uniform). I also hitched a lift to a girls school in Petworth following them v...

Re: Punishment system
Rustication - sent home for a period of time - very, very rare I think. The one occasion I know that this was applied resulted in the miscreant being sent to a monastery for a few days. It was not 'sent home' as I understood it. However, given the later furore with the Bishop of Sussex this could h...

Re: teaching relevance in later life
Many similarities to loringa's comment (what years, Andrew?). Ratty James really only considered Chemistry to be the worthwhile science, particularly organic, I think. I did an aptitude test which said my basic numerical ability was low and wasn't allowed to do double Maths like my brother, but got ...

Re: Accents at CH Horsham
My father-in-law (Eric Morgan) said that he lost his Welsh accent PDQ after arrival... Only dare to be different if you can take the attention. Re sejintenej's comment about Breton, a pissed Breton and similar Welshman could converse happily at any rugby international, and I think Cornish shares the...

Re: Roger Allam in Radio Times
My recollection is that it was Roger Allam who declaimed the spoonerism 'Give us hearty thanks, O Lord' in place of the standard words of the Grace in Dining Hall. At the time there was a underground competition of who could get away with what under the eagle eye of Pongo. Other wheezes were for the...
