Re: Are we alone?

This goes back a few posts but I would like to say to Ailurophile and to Lonelymum that I was very touched by your expression of regret that we wouldn't be continuing with our son's application to CH. I did take some time considering that decision but it just wouldn't make sense for us: I don't know...

Re: Are we alone?

I don't think it's as bad as that. CH has a huge endowment in comparison with any other school. OK, it's not big enough to pay all the fees for everyone but there are sensible things that can be done so that the charitable purpose of the school remains mainly intact. The thing at the moment is that ...

Re: Are we alone?

At what point does CH bcome an uncompetitive choice for parents who want/need a boarding school education for their children? The full CH fees are not competitive except by comparison to the most expensive schools - Ardingly, for example, would work out cheaper for someone paying full fees. Critical...

Re: Are we alone?

I sympathise with CH's position but 2 points to make. The first is that it's a bit naughty to say that the cost of CH education is over £24k per pupil because that includes over £4million of capital expenditure which is normally a one off or spread over some years - see below for excerpt from the ...

Re: Are we alone?

Unusually for prospective CH parents, we are in a position to pay full fees. We looked at CH, liked it and it didn't bother us that we would be one of only 21 families paying full fees - we think that is fair. We duly got confirmation that our son could apply as a "New Foundationer" ie pay...

Re: What do we think of the key changes for the assess process?

Reading through these posts and others it does seem to me that the CH process is due for a major overall. It is clear (now that I've read this forum!) that CH, despite its huge endowment, is suffering from the Micawber trap of outgoings exceeding incomings. Not due to profligacy but just because tha...

Re: Thinking about being a hopeful new parent

We went to the Open Day last Saturday and were so impressed. The big change since seeing it all those years ago was in the houses. We were shown round Maine B (our guide would probably be embarrassed to know we thought he was such a nice boy) and I just couldn't believe the bedrooms, baths and commo...

Thinking about being a hopeful new parent

My brother went to CH - years ago , pre-girls, pre-leave weekends and when the blankets were still WWII issue - so I know it and West Sussex quite well in an historical way. I also recommended it to a friend and I am delighted to say that her daughter has just been offered a place. My son is at at t...

Re: Are we alone?

This may be useful in working out whether CH rates are generous or not. It's a link to the bursaries calculation at the City of London School for Girls, a day school where fees are about £12,500 a year. It seems to allow for pensions and for mortgage or rent. http://www.clsg.org.uk/entrants_scholar...
