Re: Gravel Crunching

Definitely taught us science and engraved on my mind for ever that because metal expanded when hot if you were changing the height of shelves in the oven it should be done before you heated the oven up!

Re: Punishment

I think I probably have some authority to speak about punishments at CH , having received rather a lot of them... Sitting at the top of the table next to the mons (a total nightmare if you were a vegetarian and could not pass your food to anyone ) Silent meals Being made to stand out on the landing ...

Re: Fiona Toplis

I absolutely adored having history with Mrs Toplis and am still amazed at how she managed to enthrall eleven year old girls with the detailed battle strategies of Roman and Carthaginian leaders. Moreover she was just a lovely person- one of my nicest outings at CH was when I went home with Fiona one...

Re: Hertford - proscribed reading

I am devastated that somebody else has a copy of Bran the Bronzesmith. I have tried to find it for years. How could anyone say it did not have a plot.... it involved rivalry, friendship, adoption and narrowly averted human sacrifice if I remember rightly. I totally loved the book and as I was forced...

Re: Charitable status of independent schools

I would definitely support the idea of streaming but I think it has to be manged carefully and there needs to be a clear recognition that things can change for children so there is no requirement for children to remain fixed in a particular intellectual, social or emotional box. I agree with your co...

Re: Charitable status of independent schools

I am slightly perturbed about the general tone of this thread. Possibly because I have a fairly strong left wing perspective. I don't think that would automatically exclude me from supporting the idea of CH. I think in selecting for CH the balance between intelligence, financial need and emotional/s...

Re: (No longer proposed) Gathering, Hertford 5/4/08

Like most others on the day I had a brilliant time and would like to add my thanks to those who had the inspiration and the sticking power to organise it. My only regret was not being able to be in ten different places round the dinner table. I do, however, have a very public apology that I have to ...

Re: Proposed gathering at Hertford Museum - 4/5 April 08

Surely deliberate- we were confronting authority en masse for perhaps the first time at Hertford and authority made it quite clear that our victory was going to have a sting in the tail. It at least showed a dry - in the case of the pastry very dry- sense of humour.

Re: Proposed gathering at Hertford Museum - 4/5 April 08

However, Judy, I'm leaping to the defence of Miss Morrison here. I don't like to hear her called by that nickname! :x She was an admirable woman of a certain size, enormously capable, vastly organised, and with a hugely dry Scottish sense of humour. Quite agree with you and can only request forgive...

Re: Proposed gathering at Hertford Museum - 4/5 April 08

I never realised you got blamed for the bomb scare Alex. It happened in our Senior VI year when you and I had stayed on to take Oxbridge exams. We were all herded into the school hall while the school was searched. The mistresses didn't really know what to do with us in a situation that did not fit i...

Re: 'Away from the Bombs and the Boys' - available to order

I am fascinated by the collective amnesia in this thread. There certainly were those dreadful ( normal) infestations when we were there and in deed the tooth combs got used. Interestingly as I remember it the creatures did not seem able to jump the hierarchical gap between the more junior and senior...

Re: A Question of Queenie

I think after about 1970 there was no Senior Vith, as Oxbridge exams were taken in Upper Sixth. Judy or Mary can probably answer that one. We definitely still had a senior VI in 1972 as Alex and I were both in it. We almost weren't allowed to stay on however as we were considered too wicked to help...

Re: Sports standards

Overall I quite enjoyed sport at CH and am probably glad we were required to do half an hours exercise a day- it laid down a reasonable physiogical basis even if I have since squandered it. I do, however, remember having a major fallout with Nellie one year when I ended up as the sports rep for 7s a...
